Coinbase Eyes $2B BVNK Acquisition to Boost Stablecoin Dominance
US-based cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase is reportedly in advanced negotiations to acquire BVNK, a startup specializing in stablecoin infrastructure, in a deal valued at approximately $2 billion. This significant move, currently pending due diligence, is anticipated to close later this year or early next, underscoring Coinbase’s strategic pivot towards stablecoin-driven revenue and a broader financial services ecosystem.
BVNK, founded in 2021, has successfully raised $90 million from notable investors including Citi Ventures and Visa. Its platform enables merchants to accept payments in stablecoins, aligning directly with Coinbase’s ambition to create a comprehensive banking experience built around these digital assets. This acquisition would bolster Coinbase’s efforts to diversify its revenue streams beyond traditional trading fees, with stablecoins already contributing nearly 20% of its third-quarter revenue. The exchange aims to enhance the utilization of Circle’s USDC stablecoin, for which it shares revenue, and has formed partnerships, such as with Shopify, to further this goal.
The potential acquisition comes at a pivotal time, following the introduction of the first US stablecoin regulations via the GENIUS Act in July. This regulatory clarity has encouraged traditional financial players like Visa, Mastercard, and banks to explore blockchain technology for streamlined transactions. For Coinbase, acquiring BVNK would strengthen its position in this evolving sector, complementing recent initiatives like Coinbase Business, a platform assisting companies with payments and invoicing. While the deal’s finalization depends on due diligence, the pre-existing relationship through Coinbase Ventures, an investor in BVNK, suggests a facilitated process. Coinbase’s broader expansion strategy is also evident in its recent acquisition of Deribit, a leading options market player. The company’s robust third-quarter performance, with transaction revenue exceeding expectations, provides a strong backdrop for such an ambitious acquisition, despite broader market volatility affecting its stock.
