Asia Leads Tokenized Finance Revolution, Outpacing US
Asian markets, notably Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, are rapidly advancing tokenized finance, leveraging Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) to enhance financial infrastructure. This “plumbing” significantly reduces friction in collateral and settlement processes, often adjacent to crypto venues.
Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA) is establishing a pathway to integrate crypto closer to existing financial regulations, reaffirming hardware-segregated custody. A 2025 bill aims to amend the Payment Services Act, reducing legal and operational uncertainty for traditional financial institutions. This approach enables broader distribution of assets like BTC and ETH on regulated platforms, potentially channeling a portion of Japan’s ¥2,200 trillion household balance sheet into investments as rates normalize.
Hong Kong has transitioned from pilots to programmatic issuance of digitally native bonds, exemplified by the HK$6 billion HKSAR green bond. This achieved T+1 settlement, a significant improvement from conventional T+5, and maintained compatibility with existing market utilities. The Digital Bond Grant Scheme incentivizes issuance, lowering hurdles. The expansion to corporate digitally native notes by entities like Bank of Communications demonstrates de-risked rails. A stablecoin licensing bill passed in May 2025 further supports regulated settlement tokens, allowing portfolio managers a clean route to mobilize balances, potentially near crypto liquidity hubs.
Singapore has focused on retail-grade tokenized finance. The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) approved the Franklin OnChain U.S. Dollar Short-Term Money Market Fund for retail sale in May 2025. This allows tokenized shares to be distributed through local channels with standard investor protections. Collaborations like DBS, Franklin Templeton, and Ripple listing sgBENJI on DBS Digital Exchange aim to use these tokens as collateral, enhancing liquidity. Singapore’s substantial S$6.07 trillion AUM provides a robust base for tokenized funds.
The benefits across these markets include faster settlement, reduced counterparty and margin costs, increased liquidity adjacency for crypto markets, and a clearer regulatory environment. While regulatory timing and market conduct scope are crucial swing factors, these advancements are transforming tokenized cash and collateral into standard operating tools, deepening spot and derivatives markets for crypto. Projections estimate asset tokenization could reach US$16.1 trillion by 2030, underscoring the global impact of these regional innovations.
