Gold Could Get a Boost if the Treasury Revalues Its Bullion Holdings, UBP Analyst Says

A potential revaluation of the U.S. Treasury's gold holdings could give bullion prices a fresh lift in the coming months, according to Peter Kinsella, Head of Investment Services for the UK at Swiss private bank UBP. The comments, reported by Kitco on October 14, 2026, point to a possible shift in what has been driving gold prices this year.

Kinsella said gold has traded lower since the Federal Reserve's 25-basis-point rate hike in September, but the decline has been smaller than typical market relationships would suggest. He noted that U.S. 10-year Treasury yields have climbed to highs of 5.30%, while 10-year TIPS yields, which serve as a proxy for real interest rate expectations, have risen to just below 3%. "Normally, we would expect gold to decline materially in such circumstances," he said, adding that the modest pullback suggests the usual link between gold and interest rates has continued to weaken.

He pointed to investor behavior during August and early September as evidence of this shift. Even as Treasury yields rose, retail investors added to their gold ETF positions and institutional investors increased net long positions in futures markets. Kinsella said these flows are usually highly sensitive to interest rate moves, yet there was little reaction this time to the sharp rise in long-end rates. He believes most of the move in interest rates has now largely played out, leaving only limited downside risk for gold and the broader precious metals group from current levels.

Central bank buying remains another factor supporting gold, with China's central bank again counted among the largest purchasers of bullion in 2026. Kinsella said the group of central banks adding to their gold reserves this year has narrowed, but he attributes that more to elevated prices than any reduced appetite for gold. He cited a World Gold Council survey showing a record 45% of central banks expect to increase their gold holdings over the next year, which he said should help cushion gold against any significant price dips.

In the near term, UBP expects gold to trade within a tight range. Kinsella noted that markets have priced in at least three further 25-basis-point rate hikes in the coming months, but he views those expectations as too aggressive. He said much of the rise in U.S. core inflation reflects one-off factors, which could give the Federal Reserve room to ease back on further hikes once the situation in the Middle East is resolved.

The more notable upside risk, according to Kinsella, lies with the Treasury itself. He said the most pressing potential catalyst for gold in the coming months would be a revaluation of the Treasury's gold holdings, estimated at just over 8,000 tons. A revaluation toward current market prices, he said, would implicitly devalue the U.S. dollar relative to gold, sending a strong signal to markets and potentially reigniting the "debasement trade" that played out in 2025.

The commentary followed a hotter-than-expected CPI report released the same morning, which sent gold prices sharply lower. Spot gold was last trading at $4,079.42 per ounce, down 1.96% on the day, near fresh session lows at the time of the report.

Who this affects

This discussion centers on institutional dynamics, central bank policy and currency valuation rather than any specific guidance for individual savers. Still, shifts in gold prices and Treasury policy can ripple into retirement accounts, inflation expectations and the broader cost of living that households track. Readers who follow precious metals, bond yields or currency markets as part of their financial picture may find these developments relevant to how they interpret ongoing economic news.

As a personal finance writer, this site's focus is on translating complex money, insurance and benefits news into plain language for everyday households, without telling anyone what to do with their own finances. Given how technical topics like Treasury gold valuations and interest rate forecasting can get, readers are encouraged to check their own financial situation with a licensed financial professional before drawing conclusions about what any of this might mean for their personal plans.

Some analysts are also watching how blockchain technology might change the way gold is tracked, stored, and traded in the coming years.
