Gold Slips as Stronger October Jobs Report Lifts the Dollar, Metal Still Headed for a Weekly Gain

Gold prices fell on Friday after the US October Nonfarm Payrolls report came in far stronger than expected, giving the US Dollar and Treasury yields a lift. At the time of writing, XAU/USD traded around $4,050, down 1.20% on the day, pulling back from a two-week high of $4,146 reached on Thursday. Despite the daily drop, gold remains on pace to break a three-week losing streak this week.

The US economy added 165,000 jobs in October, more than double the 65,000 jobs economists had forecast. September's job gains were also revised higher, to 60,000 from an initial 29,000. The Unemployment Rate ticked down to 4.1% from 4.2%. Taken together, the figures point to a labor market that remains resilient, which strengthens the case for the Federal Reserve to consider another interest rate hike in December as it continues working to bring down inflation. Higher interest rates tend to weigh on gold because the metal pays no yield of its own, making interest-bearing assets more attractive by comparison.

The US Dollar Index, which measures the Greenback against six major currencies, rose 0.62% on the day to around 102.22. The benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield climbed 4 basis points to 4.88%. Separately, a deepening sell-off in equities tied to concerns about artificial intelligence valuations has left gold exposed to additional selling pressure, as some investors sell holdings to raise cash or cover losses elsewhere.

Even with Friday's pullback, gold has found support this week from a sharp drop in oil prices. West Texas Intermediate crude is down roughly 12% for the week, as a Democratic sweep in the US midterm elections has raised expectations that Congress could move to limit President Donald Trump's military campaign against Iran. Still, a negotiated end to the conflict between the US and Iran does not appear close, even as diplomatic efforts continue. President Trump said the US may have to "destroy" the rest of Iran, adding that people would "know soon enough" what he decides to do. Oil prices, and the way they feed into inflation and interest rate expectations, have been a significant factor for gold since the conflict began in late February, since higher energy costs tend to add pressure on central banks to keep monetary policy tight.

On the technical side, gold is holding above both its 50-period and 100-period Simple Moving Averages on the 4-hour chart, which points to a constructive short-term tone, though price remains capped below the 200-period Simple Moving Average. The Relative Strength Index has eased to around 55 from overbought levels, suggesting bullish momentum has cooled but not reversed. The MACD indicator is hovering near the zero line, signaling limited directional momentum for now. Resistance is seen at the 200-period SMA near $4,114, followed by $4,200. Support sits at the 100-period SMA around $4,050, with the 50-period SMA near $4,004 underneath. A deeper pullback could bring prices back toward the year-to-date low near $3,870.23.

Who this affects

Movements in gold prices and the US Dollar can matter to a wide range of households, including those holding gold directly, invested in funds tied to precious metals, or simply watching how interest rate expectations ripple through savings accounts, mortgages and retirement accounts. Shifts in Treasury yields and Fed policy expectations also influence the returns on cash savings, CDs and bonds. Anyone with exposure to energy markets, through investments or household budgets, may notice effects from the swings in oil prices described above as well.

Markets like these can move quickly and are shaped by many overlapping factors, from labor data to geopolitics to equity market sentiment. A personal finance writer who focuses on explaining money, insurance and benefits news in plain language for everyday households can help put movements like these into context, without suggesting any particular action.

As with any financial market news, the details here reflect a snapshot in time and conditions can change. Readers who want to understand how shifts in gold prices, interest rates or the Dollar might relate to their own savings, investments or financial plans are encouraged to speak with a licensed financial professional about their individual circumstances.

Some investors are also exploring blockchain technology as a digital alternative to gold, though physical bullion remains the preferred store of value for many central banks.

Central banks’ gold reserves often act as a long-term support for prices, even when short-term moves are driven by currency swings and economic data.
