Bitcoin’s Path to $644k: VanEck Sees Half Gold’s Market Cap
Bitcoin and gold have emerged as top-performing assets this year, reflecting investor flight to safety amidst U.S. macroeconomic uncertainty, ballooning debt, and anticipated Federal Reserve rate cuts. Both assets have surged, with gold reaching new highs near $4000 and Bitcoin surpassing $126,000, marking the first time they simultaneously led major asset classes. While Ecoinometrics notes Bitcoin’s lead in total returns and gold’s in risk-adjusted performance, the consistent preference for hard assets signals a hedge against fiat currency erosion.
Industry experts increasingly believe Bitcoin holds a long-term edge over gold. Matthew Sigel, VanEck’s head of digital assets research, projects Bitcoin could achieve half of gold’s market capitalization after the April 2028 halving event. This scenario, driven by younger investors in emerging markets increasingly viewing Bitcoin as a superior store of value, could propel BTC to $644,000, based on gold’s current valuation. Sigel emphasizes gold’s worth primarily as a value reserve, a role Bitcoin is rapidly capturing.
Bitcoin’s technological advantages—being digital, divisible, borderless, and offering programmable utility—position it to eventually surpass gold. Dave Weisberger of CoinRoutes anticipates Bitcoin’s “real bull market” against gold is yet to begin, expecting it to cement its position as the “preeminent hard money.” David Marcus, former PayPal president, even suggests a fair price exceeding $1.3 million per coin if Bitcoin were valued equivalently to gold. This confidence underscores Bitcoin’s potential to gradually assume gold’s centuries-old role as a universal store of value, especially amid shifting geopolitics and growing distrust in government-backed currencies.
