Industrial Systems Under Siege: IT Flaws Expose OT to Cyber Threats
The Trellix Operational Technology Threat Report, analyzing attacks from April to September 2025, exposes a growing threat where state groups, criminal organizations, and hybrid operators leverage common IT entry points to compromise systems supporting industrial processes. This pattern of coordinated activity blends various malicious objectives, including espionage, criminal extortion, and cyber operations often tied to geopolitical conflicts. The report emphasizes a concentrated targeting landscape, with the manufacturing sector being particularly hard-hit, accounting for 41.5% of all detections. The transportation and shipping sectors are also identified as significant targets, indicating a broad scope of vulnerability across critical industrial infrastructure. This trend highlights the critical security interdependencies between IT and OT environments, where IT vulnerabilities can directly expose and jeopardize operational technology, leading to severe consequences for industrial operations and national security.
