Markets Rally on Iran Peace Hopes: Bitcoin Soars, Oil Dips
Global financial markets, including cryptocurrencies and US stocks, experienced a significant rally following unconfirmed reports that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian indicated Tehran’s readiness to end the Iran-US-Israel conflict under certain conditions. This chatter led to a rapid market reversal on March 31, with Bitcoin climbing nearly 2% to surpass $68,000 and Ethereum rising 3% to approximately $2,100, adding about $40 billion to the broader crypto market. US stocks also rallied, with the S&P 500 gaining 2.5% and adding $1.4 trillion in market capitalization, while the Dollar Index (DXY) fell almost 1%.
This sudden shift reflects a move away from defensive assets like oil and the dollar, which had benefited from investor flight during the conflict. The Kobeissi Letter highlighted that algorithmic trading systems quickly reacted to these headlines, causing oil prices to drop sharply by 5% in minutes and moving over $1 trillion in market value globally. The Wall Street Journal also reported similar sentiments, including President Trump’s desire for a swift resolution.
The market’s sensitivity underscores the significant impact the Middle East conflict had been exerting. Oil prices, particularly Brent crude, had consistently traded above $100 and were on track for a record 54% monthly gain, fueling inflation anxieties and concerns about tighter financial conditions. This “oil shock” was a central macro channel linking the conflict to crypto markets, as digital assets increasingly behave as risk-sensitive instruments.
A prolonged conflict, especially one that disrupts energy flows through critical chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz, poses substantial risks. The International Monetary Fund had warned that such a scenario would lead to higher global prices and slower economic growth, limiting central banks’ ability to ease monetary policy. Therefore, the prospect of de-escalation, even without concrete diplomatic frameworks, offered a substantial benefit by alleviating these economic pressures and allowing a return to riskier assets.
