Outset PR’s Q1 2025 report reveals a dramatic decline in Western European crypto media traffic. Four out of five crypto-native outlets experienced significant traffic drops, highlighting a systemic issue rather than isolated incidents. The report, based on data from SimilarWeb, Ahrefs, and Google Discover, tracked 133 publications. The primary causes cited are the implementation of MiCA (Markets in Crypto-Assets) regulations, resulting in stricter advertising guidelines and regulatory warnings. Countries like Spain and Italy, with stringent rules on crypto advertising, saw particularly sharp declines, with roughly 70% of their crypto news sites experiencing traffic drops. Germany’s BaFin also imposed penalties on unlicensed crypto promotions, impacting many outlets. Google’s March core search update further exacerbated the situation, penalizing low-value content and demoting several crypto outlets within Google Discover. The impact wasn’t uniform; German-language sites saw a 62% decline, while the French market experienced a 72% drop, although some adapted by adding disclaimers and localizing content. The Benelux region, particularly the Netherlands, also suffered significant losses due to SEO changes. The UK, while outside MiCA’s jurisdiction, also witnessed widespread declines. However, some outlets thrived, demonstrating the importance of adaptation, compliance, and strong content. These successful outliers often had diversified content, strong backing from larger entities, or focused on niche areas, highlighting the need for resourcefulness and agility. Mainstream financial news outlets, in contrast, generally maintained or even increased traffic during this period, showcasing the shift of audience attention towards more established platforms. The report concludes that the crypto media landscape is undergoing a structural realignment, emphasizing the need for improved content quality, compliance measures, and diversified strategies for success.
